My Lifelong Connection with Horses: From Childhood Passion to Adult Calling
By Jenny Frizzell Garcia
Growing up in the small town of Abilene, Texas, horses were never something I imagined would become a central part of my life. However, at the age of six, everything changed when a friend invited me to try horseback riding lessons. Little did I know, that single lesson would spark a lifelong passion that would shape my identity and aspirations.
On that fateful day, I hesitantly climbed onto the back of a gentle horse, unsure of what to expect. But as soon as I felt the rhythm of the horse’s movement beneath me, I was hooked. From that moment on, I craved the feeling of freedom and connection that riding brought me.
For my seventh birthday, my parents surprised me with the ultimate gift: my very own pony. Natasha, an Arabian pony with a spirited personality, became my trusted companion and partner in countless adventures. Together, we traveled all over Texas, competing in dressage and hunter-jumper competitions.
But it wasn’t just the thrill of competition that kept me coming back to the stables day after day. It was my mentor, Inger, a skilled horsewoman from Sweden, who truly shaped my understanding of horsemanship. Under her guidance, I learned not only the technical skills of riding, but also invaluable lessons in responsibility, respect, and empathy.
From a young age, I developed a deep appreciation for the inherent beauty and intelligence of horses. As I spent hours grooming, feeding, and caring for Natasha, I began to understand the true meaning of stewardship and compassion. Horses have a way of reflecting back our emotions and intentions, teaching us to communicate with clarity and authenticity.
Through my relationship with horses, I learned the importance of listening, both to their needs and to my own intuition. They taught me to be patient, resilient, and attuned to the subtle rhythms of nature. In their presence, I found solace and sanctuary, a refuge from the pressures and expectations of the outside world.
As I grew older, my bond with horses only deepened. Even during my time at the University of Texas, where I rode for the polo team, horses remained a constant source of joy and fulfillment in my life. Their unconditional love and acceptance provided me with a sense of grounding and purpose that I couldn’t find anywhere else.
Now, as an adult, I’ve come full circle, returning to my roots with a newfound appreciation for the healing power of equine therapy. My experiences with horses have taught me invaluable lessons about empathy, understanding, and the interconnectedness of all living beings. It’s a passion I’m eager to share with others, as I embark on a journey to provide equine therapy to those in need.
In every hoofbeat and gentle nuzzle, I find a reminder of the profound impact horses have had on my life. They are more than just animals; they are teachers, healers, and lifelong companions. And for that, I am eternally grateful.
